Interfaith Park Revitalization: A Life Community Effort to Restore a Forgotten Treasure
For years, it has been the dream of former Ohio State football player and Warren native, Grover Diggs, to restore Interfaith Park, a cherished part of his childhood. The park, located in Warren, Ohio, has long been neglected, its once-vibrant spaces overtaken by overgrown grass, weeds, and trash. For Grover and his brother Carl, a former University of Michigan football player, Interfaith Park was more than just a playground. It was a safe haven that kept them off the streets and instilled values of teamwork, discipline, and community spirit.
Two years ago, the Diggs brothers purchased the park, but the scale of the restoration project proved daunting. That is, until a fortuitous meeting at church brought new hope to their vision. Marty and Melanie Schmucker, Life Members with Team United, met Grover and were moved by his dedication to restoring the park. Together, they organized a Life on Life event, bringing Members of the Life community from four different states — Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky — to join forces in revitalizing the park.
In late September, volunteers descended upon Interfaith Park for a weekend of service and transformation. Team Members mowed the overgrown grass, collected trash, cleaned up tree overgrowth from the tennis courts, repainted structures, repaired basketball goals, installed new fencing, and performed various tasks to breathe life back into the park. The cleanup effort was monumental, and four different news stations covered the event, amplifying the community's enthusiasm.
Grover Diggs envisions a bright future for Interfaith Park, planning to create a hub for youth sports and community engagement. “We’ll offer baseball, basketball, football, and even have spaces for growing fruits and vegetables,” Diggs said. “We’re going to have areas where we can plant trees, walking trails, splash pads — you name it. We really want to bring that park back to life and provide new opportunities for the community to enjoy.”
